The first post WW2 model from Mercedes were released in 1953. This was the "Ponton", suceeding the 170 model range. This car was produced till 1959 or 1962, depending on the model.

 

In these years of modesty and simplicity (ref 2cv, 4cv,...), the automotive industry expected a small car from Mercedes, did the public. This unexpected car was considered as the small Mercedes a was the first generation the middle class model to contribute to the sucess of the manufacturer.

The nickname comes from the German word for "pontoon" and refers to one definition of pontoon fenders. Pontoon fenders are a type of fender for an automobile. Unfortunately, two entirely different types of fender are defined by this term. The earlier American meaning did not reach all nations. Later, a European use of the term, with cognates in several languages, was accepted by the British. They were various Mercedes Benz model named "Ponton" including Type W120 : Berline, 4 cylinders : 1953–1962 : in models 180, 180a, 180b, 180c, 180D, 180Da, 180Db

Nowadays, many of these Mercedes are still used as taxi in many areas of the World.

Mercedes Benz 180b in good state, from March 1960, 1st owner, full history book and original registration certificate (plate number). Needs minor restauration. The car is a Gongo model originally build for the African market. Very unusual.
